Frequently Asked Questions
Varicose Veins
Do insurance companies pay for treatment of
varicose veins? Varicose veins are a
medical disease. The majority of insurance
companies will pay for varicose veins procedures for
patients that experience symptoms. We will contact
your insurance company to verify whether this is a
covered treatment.
What are treatment options? We use Endovenous Laser
Treatment(EVLT), which we consider the most effective
treatment. Other options, that we do not provide,
include Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) and Vein
Ligation and Stripping (surgery).
What is EVLT procedure? The
EVLT procedure is a minimally invasive treatment for
superficial venous reflux. A thin laser fiber is
inserted into the vein through a small opening. The
fiber delivers heat to the vein wall, causing it to
collapse and seal shut. EVLT closes the diseased vein
and other healthy veins take over and returns blood from
your legs back to your heart.
How long does the procedure
take? The procedure takes approximately
45-60 minutes. Plan on spending at least 1 hour in
our office the day of the procedure.
Is the procedure painful? Your
physician will give you a local anesthetic to numb the
treatment area. Patients report feeling minimal pain
during the EVLT procedure.
How quickly can I return to my normal
activities? Patients can resume normal
activities the same day, immediately following the
procedure. You should wait one week before running or
swimming. Your doctor will recommend a regular
walking regimen for a few weeks.
How soon will my legs feel
better? Most patients report a
noticeable improvement in their symptons soon after
having the procedure done.
What happens to the treated vein left behind in the
leg? The vein simply becomes a fibrous tissue after
treatment. Over time, the body will re-absorb this
fibrous tissue.
Are there any potential risks or
complications? As with any medical
intervention, potential risks and complications exist
with the EVLT procedure. Each patient should consult
their doctor to determine if their condition presents
any special risks. Your physician will review
potential complications of the procedure at the
consultation.
